Parking inequality

The company I work for has been in the news recently, for giving close parking spots to women, while making men park in a lot four blocks away. I feel that it ought to be self-evident that it is wrong to treat people differently on the basis of sex… but apparently it is not so self-evident to some folks.

So, let me explain it a different way: why it is bad business for a company to do this. By granting special privileges based on an arbitrary characteristic which no one has a choice over, and which has no bearing on the job at hand, it drives an unnecessary wedge between employees and hurts working relationships. Perhaps I’m atypical, but personally this experience has made me feel more alienated from my female colleagues, and feel more in common with my male colleagues. I don’t think that’s a good thing. Encouraging this sort of cliquishness is only going to distract from the work at hand.
